To live without regret
I restrain my wild heart, but all the same
Though I'm disciplined by the whip of the mind
The lion has claws even though he is tame
"Be gentle, you beast! Be kind!"
For I cannot stand your saddened eyes
Your tear-stained features
And should you lash out
Your words shall break my noble prominence
As your autumn feelings wither my regal mane
My body atrophies from your sharp defense
And rather then standing, facing my shame
I cringe and hide my face
Like a frightened kitten
